Single and multi-select property

A 'tag' or multiselect database parameter that would function as tags only in the context of that database, for filtering purposes.
Currently if I have a database where one property should always be one of x specific values, my options are to create a text field and type it every time, or to create another database of tags specific to that need, or sort everything into collections with that name. It would be nice to be able to create a pick-list property without having to muddy up the global context with excess databases.

Curiously, is there a reason why simple text can't be used for a single/multi-select option?
In my use-case, I don't want to add to the clutter of tags just for a single-select which would be limited to a single object/type. Just being able to locally have selections without making global variables or link them to some other property/types would be nice and clean.
Ex. For a To-Do type, When making a single-select property named "Status", simply having "Not Started", "In Progress", "Awaiting Approval", "Stopped", "Complete", etc. as simple text option instead of creating multiple tags which wouldn't be used anywhere else outside of that object/type would be preferred.

Jon Johnson: Agree, something we're discussing as well. We'd call it a "label" so it's different from a tag.

absolutely. I use capacities for academic research and one of the benefits of capacities is that I can search for tags (e.g. borders, externalisation, asylum, refugees etc) across object types (books, artilces, webclips, my own notes, workshops).
in fact I have a complex tag system which I apply across objects, with symbols preceding different types of tags (e.g. @places #research topic =type of source .authors/organisation, so for example, as I begin reading a source I would be tagging it like #border externalisation #migrant workers #exploitation @Mauritania .UNHCR =report
But then, I would like a simple select for say inprogress/urgent/later etc.

I think there needs to be a multi-select property like in Notion and many others. I know tags could technically be used in place of this, but it would be less elegant/organized. I’m thinking of things like say a Movie Watchlist or Book list, you would have a property named “Genre” with user-defined options such as “Horror, Action, Comedy, etc."
