Readwise Integration not working
complete
M
Madison Shimoda
I’m having trouble getting my Readwise highlights to sync via the integration. I’m using the correct sync-tag, but the highlights aren’t pulling in. Interestingly, individual books do seem to import correctly — it’s just the tag-based sync that isn’t working.
A few details in case they help:
• I’ve waited over 24 hours for syncing to occur.
• I’ve deactivated and reconnected the Readwise integration, but the issue persists.
• Device: Mac
• Browser: Chrome
• The same issue occurs on the iPhone app.
Please let me know if there’s anything else I should try or if this might be a known issue. Thank you so much for your help!

Same issue here. Worked the first time I set it up but nothing has imported since.

Madison Shimoda, Niall Mulligan hi both, sorry for the issues. Can I check that you are applying the tag to the whole source, not to each highlight? What source type isn't working?
N
Niall Mulligan
Hi Beth, thanks for the quick reply. I’ve tried across a range of documents, including ePubs, Pdfs and web links. Would also note that not all Readwise documents are showing in search when I try manual imports. I have deleted and reconnected a couple of times but it’s not made any difference.

Hi Niall Mulligan, Madison Shimoda
Do you have highlights within the tagged books? note that Capacities won't pull any information from the documents you've tagged if there's no highlights in them.
Otherwise, could you please share your tag settings and make sure that the space that's configured the settings in is correct?
Thanks for reporting!

Luis Martín Hello! Yes, I have highlits within the tagged book. Attached is a screenshot of my tag settings. Thank you!

Beth Confirming that the whole source is tagged and each one has highlights. Like Niall, it's happening across a range of documents. Thank you for looking into this!

Hi Luis, here’s mine - using the default tag and various combinations of leaving sync new on or off after deleting/reconnecting. Similar to Madison I can confirm that there are highlights in all the tagged documents in Readwise, but also that some things I’ve identified to import from RW don’t show up when trying to do it manually. One other thing is that I migrated from Omnivore in case relevant, but I don’t think it’s specifically just the omnivore docs that are having an issue. Thanks again, Niall

Hi Niall Mulligan, Madison Shimoda.
Thanks for the response! we've deployed a potential fix - could you please try the following and report back?
- Go to Reader / Readwise, and re-tag a document that doesn't exist in Capacities yet with the sync tag. If you're using "Sync all new items", adding and removing any tag will mark the content as changed.
- Check in 5 minutes if it's appearing.
- If it doesn't appear, try searching for the document title within Capacities (Ctrl/Cmd + P, or clicking on the search icon in the left navigation bar)
If it still doesn't show up, please go to Settings > Readwise & Reader > Active connection, click "Delete" and connect to your Readwise account again. Report back if after repeating steps 1-3 still doesn't make the content appear.
Thank you so much in advance, hope this solves it!

Luis Martín I tried these steps (including deleting and re-activating the Readwise integration) — still no Readwise highlights :( (Thank you for looking into this!)

Hi Luis - same experience as Madison, tried a few different things, but no dice. Also noting that a lot of documents in Readwise aren’t showing when I search. But tagging doesn’t work even on documents that are showing? Thanks!

Hi Niall Mulligan, Madison Shimoda.
Thank you again for the feedback. We still need some help replicating the issue... Could you please answer the following questions?
1) Are you not able to get any documents via the sync tag, or just a small subset of the tagged documents/highlights?
2) What's the source of the documents that fail to be imported? (kindle, reader, kobo...) are they all from the same source?
3) Could you try to temporarily change your sync tag to something else ("capacities-test", for example), apply the new tag to a Readwise document, create a test highlight in it, and check back if it was processed correctly? This will give us a hint as to if it's the communication with Readwise that's failing or how we process content.
Thank you once again! 🙏

1) Any documents via the sync tag
2) Readwise Reader (epubs and articles pulled from websites)
3) I tried this—it did not pull in the one doc with the new tag.
Thanks for looking into this!

Hi Madison Shimoda, Niall Mulligan, Sam Bishop
We pushed a fix to our servers and believe the issue should be solved now! there was a hidden incompatibility with the pro-trial subscribers that we hadn't corrected... sorry about that 🙏
You should be able to re-authenticate with Readwise (go to Settings > Readwise & Reader > Active connection, click "Delete" and connect to your Readwise account again.), and new highlights within tagged documents should start appearing after 5 minutes.
Don't hesitate to reach out again if you run into any other issues, and thanks for the patience while we worked on this!

Luis Martín I’ll give it a shot. I’m not on a trial plan, so hopefully that’s not a different issue!

Luis Martín It did not work for me, unfortunately :(

Hi Madison Shimoda,
Could you try the steps mentioned before?
- Go to Reader / Readwise, and re-tag a document that doesn't exist in Capacities yet with the sync tag. If you're using "Sync all new items", adding and removing any tag will mark the content as changed.
- Check in 5 minutes if it's appearing.
- If it doesn't appear, try searching for the document title within Capacities (Ctrl/Cmd + P, or clicking on the search icon in the left navigation bar)
- Could you try to temporarily change your sync tag to something else ("capacities-test", for example), apply the new tag to a Readwise document, create a test highlight in it, and check back if it was processed correctly?
Thank you!

Luis Martín Good news: it worked! 👏👏👏 The two docs I tagged have been successfully imported. So, is my next step to remove the sync tag from my Readwise docs and re-tag all the docs I want to import into Capacties with the sync tags? (Might there be a trick for a faster way to do this? If not, that's fine. I'm just excited to try this, so I'm willing to put in the effort.)
Luis Martín
Hi Madison Shimoda,
Great news! 🥳 There's a bulk actions function in Reader that lets you apply tags to multiple objects at once. Removing the sync-tag and applying it again should make the edit recognizable by our server.
You can access the bulk action menu by clicking Shift+B. There's a "Tag all as" function. Here's a link to Readwise docs where they explain this.

Madison Shimoda
Luis Martín Thanks, will do! Also, is there any chance you can reset my trial back to its 14 days (I'm currently at 7 days left)? I would largely be using Capacities to organize my Readwise highlights for my project, and would love to have the full trial period to explore. Thank you again!
Luis Martín
Hi Madison Shimoda,
Unfortunately no, the pro trial is relatively new and we don't have any internal functionality to extend it at the moment.
Thank you for the understanding! don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything else :)

Luis Martín Understood! Thanks for letting me know
OK, so I'm so sorry to bother you again but I don't think the fix is actually working. I removed and re-tagged all appropriate docs with the sync tags. Removed sync tag from test docs and deleted the old test docs from Capcities. But now Capacities have repulled the deleted docs (which no longer have the sync tag) and have not pulled in anything that actually has the sync tag?
Luis Martín
Hi Madison Shimoda,
No bother! Please note that our server syncs every 5 minutes, so anything that was just tagged will probably appear soon if it's already in Reader and has been tagged with the sync-tag. If a sync happened between the tag removal and the old test doc deletion it's likely they were brought back.
I'd recommend that you utilize the sync tag that's already applied on the documents you want to eventually import. And only start "cleaning up" after 20 minutes or so from the moment you changed the sync tag in order to be safe. If you do notice that after a while new highlights from the rightly-tagged documents are still not appearing we should probably investigate again, but the fact the deleted objects were created is a sign that the integration works - just happened to sync at a bad time considering the cleanup.
Also make sure that the option "Sync all new items" is disabled since otherwise that will automatically import and apply the sync-tag to every Readwise document, no matter how it's tagged. In order to have the server filter via the sync tag that option must be disabled.
Hope that helps! Please reach out again if something still looks weird.
M
Madison Shimoda
Luis Martín Hi Luis! I've waited a while now, and no new, rightly-tagged documents have been pulled in. And "sync all new items" is disabled. :(
Luis Martín
Hi Madison Shimoda, could you re-apply the tag to a few documents and waiting for 10 minutes? let me know if that still doesn't import them.
M
Madison Shimoda
Luis Martín It seems to be working! (
Knocking on wood
) The books seem to be taking a bit longer than the articles, etc. but they are still being imported slowly! I'm going to slowly add the sync tag to more docs and monitor the situation. Thank you for your help!S
Sam Bishop
Luis Martín SO new documents I tag are being imported, but old documents that never got imported are still not coming in, even with removing the tag then re-adding.
Any solution?
N
Niall Mulligan
Hi Luis, thanks for this - seems to be working as expected for me now, but it did require re-tagging documents in readwise, also I note that new highlights don't automatically get the capacities tag on that side and have to be added manually - which is fine by me, I use logseq for the big dump of all my highlights but really enjoying Capacities for more focussed/intentional analysis. Thanks again and congrats on a great tool, will definitely be subscribing once the trial is up.
Luis Martín
Hi Sam Bishop, please attempt the following:
- Do manual imports works for an old document?
- If it does, remove the tag in Readwise and wait for 10 mins - then apply it again and wait another 10.
If they still don't come in, or the manual import fails, please let us know. Thanks!
Luis Martín
Hi Niall Mulligan,
If you have "Sync all tags" disabled, once something is imported from Reader/Readwise it should get the sync-tag applied. Note that this happens at the document level, not the highlight level. If that's not the case please let me know.
Thanks for the kind words! :)

Luis Martín I actually just found the imports! So looks like it’s working:)

Hi, same problem it seems like. I'm on the trial based on readwise integration primarily in case relevant - enjoying it a lot, really well thought out tool. Manual sync seems to work fine, but I've not successfully synced using the sync tag at any point, and sync for new items also hasn't worked. I'm tagging the documents in Readwise with "capacities" as the default tag.
