global inbox

'global inbox' stands for 2 things:
1 – place to
centrally
collect 'stuff' / intake that can 't be placed otherwise immediately2 – way to
quickly & globally
enter / insert stuff w/o facing the (sometimes) critical 'friction'
of having to decide / navigate to some more detailed place in the structure first (needing to think about 'whereever to put this')reasoning / motivation :
1 - can currently be emulated via a tagging system, and currently already has a vague kind of place place in 'daily notes' –
but
this is more or less an artificial bending of the primary function of real journalling; plus: it takes extra time / makes things 'sketchy', especially in terms of collecting, overview etc.2 - doesn't exist at all as function; even though
quick / instant capture of thoughts / finds is a really critical aspect / dimension of digital 'knowledge systems'

... here, one sees there is demand & deeper ongoing thinking around this issue in the community, already – ... but there was no 'ticket' (feature request), yet.
so, this ticket is to rectify that.
implementation:
there are some different versions / 'architecturings' of a 'global inbox' one could envision; and certainly the intransparency of spaces to each other might also be factoring in here....
I would regard anything as 'solution' as long as it addresses the principle problems of 1) & 2) mentioned above – adding a # 3) criterion, which is
cross-device
– any further constructive detailing welcome! 🫰🤝🐿️🌻

so that you can pick up where you left off easier and periodically review content that may be otherwise lost, the idea would be that you can scroll through it like a social media for yourself so you can scroll without having to click on each date individually which creates more friction--its sort of there in the weekly/monthly view but doesn't include information about what your activity was in a birds eye view.

Items in a global inbox should still be connected to the creation date, so that when we moved it to a target space (inbox should be independent on spaces), it will keep it's date, so that on the calendar, it will still be present on the creation date. (At this time I am using the Dailynote for my inbox, but that is inconvinient, as I have to switch spaces first (I have one for personal and one for work related stuff - but the quick capture is not that quick, as we can't move objects (in fact, blocks) between spaces.

This would be really helpful. I feel like Capacities lacks the ability to quick capture things on IOS (you need to first open the app, if you share the link from other app if the app is closed it will not handle that) and it lacks the ability to go through recently added things in desktop. Like we can go day by day but sometimes is easier to have a one global inbox to go through it and see what is not tagged, what weblinks were added etc. Like a global query to see all not tagged objects sorted by date.

I’d like to add two arguments in favor of the inbox as an extra layer to any line that is added to “Today”:
(I do t think I would want every object to appear in the inbox, not sure though)
- Tana has an inbox
- Workarounds without #inbox are not usable
Workarounds are possible, but cease to fully cover inbox for me since I want everything to land in an inbox from the outside (web clipper, share sheet, mails, WhatsApp etc) and not have to actively remember to set #inbox.
The workarounds where I just treat Today or the past 3 days or so as inbox make it hard to keep an overview since I won’t empty “Today” fully.
I am thinking of an inbox with the inbox-zero in mind (remove from inbox) + its own ordering (send to bottom/top of inbox)

Farhoud Cheraghi totally agree w/ the functional reasoning (– even though I ceased subscribing to zero-inbox thinking some years ago 😂)

vision assemblies I actually also don’t like the stress behind inbox zero anymore. But the workflow idea behind works well for me. Most inbox tools just lack the right feature of a useful inbox: that also counts for all email clients I have ever tested.
What helped me to reduce inbox zero stress is to sometimes just “archive” when an item becomes smelly in my inbox.

Hi vision assemblies,
thanks for sharing your ideas in detail. Steffen and I have been discussing this as well for a while now. This is a valuable contribution to a solution!
